Self Assessment Essay

I am not a writer. I have never been interested in English and because of that I did not write. I believe my writing skills have definitely declined over the years since high school. During this course I was able to get back into writing. After completing this course, I believe my writing has improved from my previous works.

For the rhetorical analysis, I choose to use an advertisement of a skin bleaching product used mainly in India. In my writing, I explained many different strategies used by the sellers in the advertisement and used history of the country to identify why it may not be controversial to its intended audience. By doing this i was able to complete Course learning objective 3 and 5.

This course allowed me to interact with people and see things from their perspectives and writing styles. Working in groups can be difficult because everyone has different ideas of how the final project should look. Including one person’s idea and omitting another may cause conflict. I was very nervous,when i was told i had to work with other people in a group to complete the literature review. For the literature review, my group and I decided on the topic, Genetic Engineering. We decided on 3 subtopics that would allow everyone in the group to have enough to write and meet the word limit.Each person had to have three sources, which we had to cite and summarize for the essay, from the school’s library database for their part of the essay. Using the database allowed us to find many works related to our topic of choice. We used google docs to put our finished work together and did peer reviews. Doing this exposed me to the writing styles of my members .Every time before a deadline we would read the project together and made suggestions on each other’s work . After this project i was able to overcome objective 4, 7 and 8.

For the Collaborative project and the presentation, we decided it would be a good idea to make a children’s book. This step involved a lot of planning.We decided we should do separate parts of the book after trying to do it together and failing because of difference in time schedules. For the children’s book we decided we should take a stance and choose to only include the positives of genetic engineering. We decided on this as we were dealing with younger audiences and didn’t want to scare them away from it.As the writer of the book, I had to edit and change the plot several times. Peer reviews and feedback from my members really helped with editing and trimming down the originally lengthy book. Different drafts were created and my group members gave feedback on each telling me which parts would be good to change.I used this feedback to complete the draft and the final project . For the last project which was the presentation, we each did 3-4 slides and after receiving examples helped us to improve our work and give a good presentation. I was able to complete course learning objective number 2 and 6.

This semester i was able to test and improve my writing skills. I was able to interact with people and see things from their perspectives and writing styles. I learned techniques to apply to my writing in future classes from the detailed examples provided. I was able to bring out my creativity and be more social than i would be any other class.
